Severe weather warning for NSW South Coast as deluge brings flash flooding

Heavy rain warning for Sydney

Residents of NSW's South Coast are being urged to brace themselves for flash flooding amid one of the biggest downpours of the year.

Already in the past 24 hours much of the south coast has received more than 100mm of rain, leading to hundreds of requests for assistance from the NSW SES.

Nowra has received 204mm, Foxground 159mm and Port Kembla has received 106mm.

The Bureau of Meteorology is warning that the sudden deluge could lead to flash flooding.

"Heavy rain is already impacting parts of southern NSW and is expected to continue to develop through tonight and tomorrow," the forecaster said.

"This rain has the potential to trigger flooding in numerous areas beginning as early as tonight, and worsening through Sunday."

A Severe Weather Warning is in place for the South Coast and Illawarra districts.

Residents are also warned not to enter the water with large hazardous surf currently impacting the NSW coastline.

The swell is forecast to lash the coast today, tomorrow, and well into next week.

"A low pressure system is making its way southwest across NSW and is producing high winds, rain and damaging surf. It will create dangerous conditions for swimmers, surfers, rock fishers and boaters," said Surf Life Saving NSW CEO Steven Pearce.

"Surf conditions from Eden up to Illawarra may become extreme. We are urging members of the public not to engage in coastal activities that might put them at risk.

"If people put themselves in danger in these conditions, our surf lifesavers may not be able to save them."
