A man has died after being found with serious injuries at a rubbish tip in the NSW Hunter region.

The 54-year-old local was found with "multiple significant injuries" at the Cessnock Waste Management Centre on Old Maitland Road at 5pm last night.

Police said he died soon after.

Investigating officers said they want to speak to anyone who was there between 4.30pm and 5pm and may have seen the man or his 46-year-old friend.

They're treating the death of the man, who was known to police, as suspicious.

"At this stage we don't know if they were there unlawfully or not. They were in an isolated part of the facility," Hunter Valley Police District Crime Manager Detective Inspector Matt Zimmer said.

The 46-year-old has been speaking to police, but is not in custody.

"He's provided us with certain information and we're following up a number of things he told us."

Investigations continue.
