A drug addict sprung with pipe bombs and a makeshift gun workshop in his Melbourne home has been jailed.

Timothy Moran was caught when his intoxicated friend wandered into Knox Police Station in July 2019 with one of his homemade guns.

A raid on Moran's Eltham home uncovered a gun-making workshop, an array of DIY firearms, two functioning pipe bombs, ammunition, a nunchaku, machete, a dead cannabis plant and a bag of weed.

Moran made the guns while under the influence of drugs and had dozens of pictures and videos of the weapons on his phone, including of one being fired.

He didn't intend to sell them but at least one ended up in the hands of an intoxicated associate, which led police to Moran's makeshift operation.

The 45-year-old tried to jump the back fence but was caught and pleaded guilty to offences including manufacturing firearms without a licence, possessing explosive substances and drug cultivation.

He said his life went downhill after he separated from his wife and a serious car accident caused him to become dependent on pain medication.

Moran was jailed in the County Court of Victoria on Tuesday for 18 months. He must also complete a two-and-a-half year community correction order, including 300 hours of unpaid work.

Judge Michael Bourke said Moran's offending was dangerous and his ability to rehabilitate himself depended on staying off drugs and alcohol.

"You can give no very persuasive explanation for your offending beyond drug use and your developing involvement in that criminal subculture," the judge said.

Moran has already spent 300 days behind bars awaiting sentence.
