The body of Madison Tam has been found by police after she vanished from a popular Queensland swimming spot on Monday afternoon.
The 18-year-old was swimming with three friends near the notorious Devil's Pool when Queensland Police believe she was sucked into a dangerous underwater current.
Police divers, SES and swift water rescuers were unable to find her in the initial searches.
Ms Tam's death has shaken the local community with Cairns MP Michael Healy extending his support to her family and friends.
"It is a tragedy, an absolute tragedy and it would be a terrible time to be going through right now," Mr Healy said.
"Obviously anybody swimming in any of these waterholes needs to exercise extreme caution."
The swimming pool has claimed the lives of at least 17 people since 1959.
