A 68-year-old man from Toowoomba has become Australia’s ninth coronavirus victim.

The man died on Wednesday afternoon in intensive care at Toowoomba Hospital.

It’s understood the man contracted COVID-19 onboard a Royal Caribbean cruise ship that docked in Sydney last week.

On Wednesday evening, Queensland Health released a statement saying the man had a serious underlying medical condition before contracting the virus.

“Queensland Health can confirm a second Queenslander has passed away from coronavirus (COVID-19) on the Darling Downs,” the statement reads.

“Queensland Health offers its sincere condolences to his family. “The man’s family remain in isolation as close contacts.”

A 77-year-old Sunshine Coast woman with an underlying medical condition passed away in Sydney last week.

As of 3pm AEDT on Wednesday, there were 2423 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Australia.

NSW is the worst hit, with 1029 cases, including two children.

Victoria added 55 cases overnight, taking the total number of infected people to 466.

Of the nine deaths recorded, seven have been in NSW, one in WA, and the latest in Queensland.
