Political Advocacy

As the peak representative body for the Muslim community one of our most important

roles at AFIC is to advocate on behalf of our community on matters of policy and public

interest. In the last month we met with, spoken or written to, a number of senior

political stakeholders. This has included:

• Prime Minister Scott Morrison

• Marise Payne, Minister for Foreign Affairs

• David Coleman, Minister for Immigration, Citizenship & Multicultural Affairs

• Chief of Staff to Anthony Albanese, Leader of the Opposition

• Tony Burke, Manager of Opposition Business

• Mark Dreyfus, Shadow Attorney General

• Kristina Keneally, Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs

• Richard Di Natale, Leader of the Australian Greens

• Anne Aly, Member for Cowan

• Ed Husic, Member for Chifley

There have been a number of issues raised in these discussions. The most significant of

them have been:

• The rise in Islamophobia and far right extremism. Particularly the increase in

physical attacks on Mosques and community centres.

• The Government’s proposed Religious Discrimination Reforms. While the issue

of religious vilification is extremely important and is the main focus of our

advocacy, there are in fact other issues in the proposed reforms that need to be

addressed. We will be working closely with the with all sides to try and find

solutions to these issues.

• Gaza, China and other oppressed Muslim communities. We continue to raise the

apparent lack of consistency Australia takes on issues of Human Rights affecting

Muslims overseas. Australia needs to be principled and consistent in its

approaches and on behalf of our community we will continue to raise this issue.

We have built a strong foundation to continue to advocate on these, and other, issues on

your behalf. In the new year we will be working even closer with key political leaders to

have the voice of Australian Muslims heard insha’Allah.
