Strong winds battering Sydney have caused chaos as they forced the cancellation of flights and ferries in the city.
Wind gusts of more than 70kph were recorded at Sydney Airport and Sydney Harbour on Thursday, as the Bureau of Meteorology issued a strong wind warning for the city and parts of the east coast of NSW.
The winds caused the cancellation of 20 domestic flights from 2pm onwards, with just a single runway in use.
An airport spokesman said staff were expecting strong westerly winds into the night and urged passengers to leave home with plenty of time before their flights.
By Thursday evening, the winds had also caused the cancellation of ferries running between Manly and Circular Quay.
Sydney Ferries tweeted the news saying replacement buses were being organised and travellers should allow extra time for journeys.
A severe weather warning was also issued on Thursday afternoon for damaging winds in the Illawarra and parts of the South Coast, Central Tablelands, Southern Tablelands and Snowy Mountains.
The BOM has already issued a gale wind warning for the Sydney coast, Hunter coast and Eden coast on Friday.
