A three-year-old girl has been killed after being struck in the carpark of a childcare centre at Epping, in Melbourne's north, in an incident police described as "terrible".
The emergency services were called to the Kiddy Palace childcare centre in McDonalds Road, around 4:45pm following reports a child had been hit.
"A three-year-old girl has been tragically killed," said Detective Sergeant Daryll Out of Victoria Police.
"The incident occurred when a car accidentally struck the young girl."
Detective Sergeant Out said the exact circumstances of the incident were still under investigation and he could not elaborate on how it happened.
"We certainly urge anybody who's around children to be very careful and mindful that terrible accidents such as these can occur if everyone's not paying full attention to what they're doing," he said.
Police said a woman had been taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a stable condition.
The driver of the vehicle was assisting police with the investigation.
Several people were spotted in the backyard of the centre and it was unclear if some young children were still inside.
Shocked people were standing around the scene and onlookers in tears had been interviewed by police.
The SES cordoned off a large section of the carpark underneath a tarp.
Police forensics have been taking photos of numerous cars.
A spokesperson for Ambulance Victoria said both a standard paramedic unit and an intensive care unit were sent to the scene.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
