Man shot by police in Melbourne after chase in stolen tow truck

A man has been shot by police after being chased in a stolen tow truck in north-west Melbourne.

Police arrested a man following the chase, which started on Grange Road in South Morang about 4:00pm.

The tow truck drove erratically and went through red lights as it was chased through multiple suburbs before crashing into a tree in Wright Street in Sunshine about 5pm.

Special Operation Group and the Critical Incident Response Team arrived at the scene and the male driver was shot by police during the arrest.

In a statement, Victoria Police said the driver, yet to be identified, was initially treated at the scene, before being transported to hospital in a serious condition.

No-one else was injured during the incident and the investigation is ongoing.

The exact circumstances surrounding the shooting were yet to be determined.

The statement said Professional Standards Command will oversee the investigation, as per procedure following a police shooting.
