Parents 'used 14-year-old son to smuggle drugs'

Groote Eylandt is an island off the coast of Arnhem Land

The parents of a 14-year-old boy have been arrested in the Northern Territory for allegedly using their son to smuggle drugs into Groote Eylandt.

A luggage check was conducted by police from the Alyangula Dog Operations Unit on a flight that arrived on the island on Friday.

They discovered 110 grams of cannabis in the child's luggage.

A 33-year-old woman and 37-year old man were interviewed and later charged with procuring a child to supply less than the commercial quantity of a Schedule 2 drug.

Acting Senior Sergeant Craig Dunlop said it was not the first time parents have attempted to smuggle drugs into the island via their children's luggage.

"It's an appalling practice and places the children at risk of harm," Sergeant Dunlop said.

"The maximum penalty for this particular offence is imprisonment for 10 years."
