A 23-year-old man has died in a high speed car crash on a major Adelaide road.

Moments before the crash about 11am today the car had been spotted driving erratically through nearby streets.

It crashed into one side of the normally busy Torrens Road, before careering across the road, slamming into a stobie power pole and tree, splitting in half.

South Australia Police are angry at the senseless loss of life, saying it could have been avoided.

"I can tell you that our early indications are, speed was a factor," said Superintendent Bob Gray, from the Major Crash section.

The car's motor was flung out of the car in the collision and hit a fence, metres away from the crash site.

Friends and relatives of the dead man, who was from Kilburn, gathered at the scene, hugging and crying each other.

The death brings the state's road toll for the year to 74. Senior police told 9News 14 of the deaths have involved speed.
