The Egyptian Community  Canberra held a farewell dinner for H.E. Mohamed Khairat and his wife Mrs Omneya Negm

The Egyptian Community held a farewell dinner for H.E. Mohamed Khairat and his wife Mrs Omneya Negm at Turkish Pide House in Canberra last Thursday night.

The event organisers were Engineer Tarek El-Ansary, Consulting Engineer and Business Owner, Dr Ashraf Ghanem, Associate Professor at the University of Canberra Chemistry Program, and Mona Abdallah, Administrative Officer at the Saudi Embassy.

In a poignant speech to the gathering of leading Canberra Egyptian community figures, Mr El-Ansary highlighted the eminent role Ambassador Khairat played in strengthening Egyptian-Australian cultural links, bridging generational gaps, and the sheer diversity and broadness he displayed in developing important links between the many threads of the community in Australia. He mentioned “during his term in Canberra, Ambassador Khairat and his wife had an open-house policy, and were effusive and generous in his hosting of Politicians, Ministers both locally and from abroad, Members of the Islamic and Coptic Christian leaderships, Musicians, Artists, Actors, Youth, and even Rocket Scientists”. In reply, Ambassador Khairat was magnanimous in stating that notwithstanding the multiplicity of people he has helped to coalesce around shared community values, he still envisioned doing more.

Mr El-Ansary highlighted his very distinguished role in writing an important chapter in the Egyptian-Australian community story.
