Sydney 'stabbing': Man with knife taken into custody at Wynyard after witnesses pin him down

A heavy police presence has responded to calls of a knifeman in Sydney's inner-city.

A man covered in blood and brandishing a large knife has been chased by witnesses through Sydney's CBD after a suspected stabbing incident.

Eyewitness footage of the man being arrested near Wynyard Station shows him being held down by police and pedestrians.

A spokeswoman for NSW Police told 7NEWS the man was taken into custody on Clarence Street about 2pm Tuesday, saying, "It is too early to determine whether there were any injuries."

A witness who chased the man could be heard saying: "Do you know how many people you just stabbed, you dog?"

"You just stabbed a chick, mate, in broad daylight."

Police are urging anyone in the city to avoid the area.
