Two truck drivers have died in a head-on crash after their B-doubles collided and burst into flames in the Barossa.

A 26-year-old Riverland man and a 64-year-old Andrews Farm man were killed instantly after their vehicles collided just after midday.

A dust storm prevented emergency services from accessing the crash site on the Sturt Highway near Truro, almost 100km north-east of Adelaide.

Local police described the scene as "horrendous".

"Police and emergency services have had extreme difficulty getting to the scene due to extremely high winds, low visibility due to very, very heavy dust and the fire itself ... (the dust) then made efforts to extinguish the fires even more difficult than normal," Chief Inspector Shane Addison said.

"The emergency services at the scene are working under horrendous conditions ... visibility at times was virtually non-existent and certainly at the best it was only 10m or so."

About 15 fire crews worked to contain the truck fire for more than three hours.

"There were a number of small explosions during the course of the fire, they are suspected to be aerosol cans," Chief Inspector Shane Addison said.

Investigators remain at the scene of the double fatality, which is being investigated by major crash.

Police will investigate whether low visibility was a crash factor.

"All motorists at all times should drive to the conditions. When roads conditions become so hazardous that they are placing their lives at risk by driving at all then motorists are advised to pull over and stop."

It's understood a number of vehicles were pulled over on the Sturt Highway waiting for conditions to improve around the time of the crash.

Police are appealing to anyone who witnessed the tragedy.

"We certainly ask any person who may have witnessed the collision or was in that vicinity that can assist police or may have dashcam footage to come forward."

The road between Blanchetown and Truro will remain closed indefinitely due to extremely hazardous driving conditions and debris from the crash.

The two deaths ta

ke the state's road toll to 73, compared with 43 at the same time last year.
