.A Jetstar plane has returned to Sydney Airport after an issue with landing gear.

JQ420 was bound for the Gold Coast.

Emergency and airport crews surrounded the plane on the tarmac as they work to fix the issue.

"We didn't know anything we were just circling around over the ocean," one passenger told 9News.

Another said: "We took off, they told us nothing, and then all of a sudden they say 'sorry, we're going back to Sydney.'"

The flight was rescheduled after a delay of almost 90 minutes and has now arrived at its destination.

There was a problem with the landing gear not being able to retract, according to the low cost airline.

Jetstar said in a statement: "After taking off from Sydney airport the flight crew of a Jetstar Aircraft elected to return to Sydney after receiving an onboard system alert.

"The aircraft landed normally.

"We apologise to customers for the delay caused, however the safety of our passengers and crew is our top priority."
