Australian Facebook users warned of scam using 'cloned friends' to steal thousands of dollars

Fake friends are targetting Australian Facebook users with an elaborate scam telling them they are owed money - but need to pay a fee first.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission's Scamwatch is warning Australian Facebook users to be vigilant as an old scam finds a new angle.

It comes after revelations that 37 victims in WA have lost more than $600,000 to the scam in just the past few months.

First, the crooks will clone the Facebook profiles of ordinary users and then access that user's friends.

They will then send a new friend request and, once that is accepted, the brazen rip-off begins.

Endless fees
Victims are contacted by their cloned friend’s profile via Messenger asking if they had received their money, as their name is on a list of recipients who have won money either from a grant scheme or a lottery.

Because the message comes from a friend, the victim is less likely to question the scam.
