A man killed in a shooting outside a nightclub in inner Melbourne is understood to be security guard Aaron Khalid Osmani.

Four people were taken to hospital after the shooting outside the Love Machine nightclub near Little Chapel Street and Malvern Road in Prahran about 3.20am this morning.

United Voice Victoria posted to its Facebook page that Osmani had died "just doing his job".

Police confirmed a 37-year-old man from Narre Warren South suffered life-threatening injuries in the shooting and died in hospital.

A crowdfunding page set up for the family described Osmani as a "kind, funny and easygoing guy".

A 28-year-old man remains in a critical condition in the Alfred Hospital.

Bloodstained clothing left in the middle of a road alongside bullet casings were the initial focus of detectives and forensic police who are scouring the area for clues.

Police have since said they are investigating if a black Porsche SUV seen leaving the area, and later found burnt out in Wollert, is related to the shooting.

The crime scene encompasses several blocks, and people are being told to avoid the area.

Police are urging anyone with video footage of the incident or information to contact them.
