Police have raided a motel near the NSW tourist hotspot of Byron Bay as they search for two people, after a former detective was shot in the face in Melbourne last week.

Victoria Police have issued arrest warrants for Jack Harvey, 26, and Mark Dixon, 30, who they believe are in the Byron Bay area.

NSW Police yesterday raided a motel in Suffolk Park, near the tourist town, but did not find the pair.

Police want to speak to Mr Harvey and Mr Dixon about the attack on former NSW detective Sid Morgan.

The 53-year-old was shot in the face on a street in Melbourne's west last Thursday night.

Mr Morgan — now a real-estate agent in Sydney's north-west — remains in a critical condition at Royal Melbourne Hospital.

A woman who witnessed yesterday's raid said police barricaded the motel's car park.

"About four or five cop cars rocked up to the motel, some were in standard uniform but there were also police were wearing full black uniforms, carrying rifles," she said.

"They surrounded one of the rooms ... they had a loud speaker and I heard them calling out the name Mark."

Both Mr Harvey and Mr Dixon are believed to speak with an Irish accent.

Two men from Melbourne's west were arrested on Saturday in relation to the shooting but were released without charge.

Acquitted of murder

Mr Morgan was in 1997 acquitted of the murder of his brother-in-law Mansour Suha, who had been charged with molesting three young girls.

Mr Suha was shot at a home in Oakhurst, western Sydney, on May 26, 1995 after being released on bail over the alleged molestation.

The court heard Mr Morgan killed Mr Suha because he believed the girls were in danger.
