A driver has cheated death after a massive overhead road sign fell and crushed her car as she drove along Melbourne's Tullamarine Freeway.

The sign over the inbound exit for Bulla Road and Bell Street came down just before 6:00pm.

The driver, a 53-year-old woman from Tullamarine, was taken to hospital with neck and hand injuries.

"It is unusual," Highway Patrol officer Jason Lane said.

"I haven't come across it before."

Wind was not a factor, he said, and VicRoads had been requested to check other signs.

No other cars were hit.

VicRoads spokesman Andrew Crook said traffic is being diverted away from the site while crews clean up the road.

"Our concern is making sure everyone is safe," he said.

An investigation into how the sign could have fallen is underway.
