Air Niugini plane overshoots runway in Micronesia and sinks in ocean
An Air Niugini plane has overshot a runway in Micronesia and plunged into the sea, with all passengers and crew reported to be safe, an airport official says.
Videos posted to social media showed the plane half-submerged in the water with boats ferrying those who were aboard to the shore.
Micronesia's Pacific Daily News reported the plane crash landed on Thursday morning at Chuuk airport, quoting airport manager Jimmy Emilio saying that the 36 passengers and 11 crew members were safe.
Emilio said the plane, flying from Port Moresby, overshot the landing at around 9.30am local time, ending up in the lagoon around 160 metres from the runway.
He said the passengers and crew were at the local hospital undergoing checks, with no serious injuries reported.
The PNG Accident Investigation Commission was sending a team to the accident site, the ABC reported.
