Riyadh sends strong signal to Iran by shooting down SCUD missile fired by Houthis
By:Heshmat Alavi (@heshmatalavi)
Saudi Arabia shot down an Iran-supplied SCUD missile fired into the Sunni kingdom early Saturday by Yemen’s Shiite Houthis, marking what could be a major escalation in the months-long war, the Los Angeles Times reported. This is also seen as a strong signal from Riyadh to Tehran that it will not tolerate the ayatollahs meddling in the Arabian Peninsula, let alone its own soil.
A Patriot missile battery shot down the Scud around 2:45 a.m. Saturday (2345 GMT) near the southwestern city of Khamis Mushait, the official Saudi Press Agency reported without mentioning any casualties.
Saudis on social media reported hearing air raid sirens go off around the city during the attack.
The agency blamed Shiite rebels, known as Houthis, and their allies in forces loyal to former Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh. However, what is common knowledge for everyone is that these missiles are provided by Iran to cause turmoil in the region. This is another version of the ayatollahs’ “export of revolution”, read export of fundamentalism, extremism, terrorism, death, carnage, chaos and …
Why are the Iran-backed Houthis resorting to such extreme measures against Saudi Arabia?
Riyadh is leading a coalition targeting the rebels in airstrikes that began March 26 in support of the country’s exiled President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi. Those strikes have targeted arms cache and other SCUD missile sites around the country, all but crippling the Houthis.
The Shiite rebels launched their advance last September, sweeping into the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, and taking over government ministries and other areas. They held top officials, including Hadi, under house arrest until Hadi fled, first to the southern port city of Aden, then to Saudi Arabia as the rebels closed in backed by forces loyal to Saleh.
On Friday, the Houthis and Saleh’s forces launched a ground offensive targeting the Saudi border, which saw the kingdom fire artillery and launch Apache attack helicopters, the Saudi Press Agency reported. The agency reported “scores” of rebel forces being killed in a battle that lasted from dawn to noon Friday, with four Saudi soldiers killed in the fighting.
The Saudis and Western powers accuse the Houthis of receiving military support from Shiite Iran as part of a larger proxy war between the Sunni kingdom and the Islamic Republic across the Mideast. Iran claims of sending “humanitarian aid” to the rebels, thinking the world actually falls for such ridiculous nonsense.
The one part that has been warning about Iran’s Islamic fundamentalism and terrorism has been the Paris-based democratic opposition led by Maryam Rajavit and the National Council of Resistance of Iran. She even once described Iran’s meddling in the region, especially Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Lebanon and beyond as 100 times more dangerous than its nuclear ambitions. The world never listed to the Iranian opposition, and now the innocent nations of the Middle East are paying the price. Maryam Rajavi will be once again calling for a firm stance against Iran and its ayatollahs at her movement’s annual rally to be held on June 13 in Paris. The entire world should rise in support of the Iranian people and their organized resistance to bring about change in Iran. This is the solution to establish ultimate peace and stability in the Middle East and beyond.
