One dead in helicopter crash at Cooloongatta airport

July 02, 2009 11:39am

THE elderly pilot of a helicopter has died after crashing into bushland at Coolangatta Airport on the Gold Coast this morning.

The 72-year-old man crashed about 10.15am, approximately 100m into heavy scrub, but still within airport grounds, The Courier-Mail reported.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Emergency Services said fire crews at the scene extricated the man from the aircraft before conducting CPR in an attempt to revive him.

It is believed that two passengers were on board the R22 helicopter, a spokeswoman from the RACQ CareFlight Rescue team said.

She said the passengers were currently being treated at the scene.
