Box Hill crane accident: Melbourne worker killed, two men injured on construction site

Workers injured on Melbourne construction site (ABC News)

A man has been killed and two others are injured after a tub of concrete fell from a crane at a construction site in Melbourne's east.

Paramedics say two of the men, including the man who died, were submerged and trapped in concrete after the tub fell on top of them.

Emergency services were called to the worksite, on the corner of Watts Street and Whitehorse Road, Box Hill, after the crane's chain snapped about 12:20pm.

One of the trapped men died.

An Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said another man was being transferred to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a serious condition, and another person with minor injuries had been taken to Box Hill Hospital.

A fire brigade spokeswoman said its specialist urban search and rescue teams and high angle rescue technicians were on the scene.

WorkSafe has been notified.

'Absolutely terrible'

Union leader John Setka told 3AW Radio it was a "traumatic" incident and the union had sent counsellors to the scene.

"It's absolutely terrible," said Mr Setka, the Victorian secretary of the Construction, Forestry, Maritime, Mining and Energy Union (CFMMEU).

"From what we can tell, it's one of them hammerhead cranes, the ones that sort of stick out vertically.

"[It] looks like the hook's come off with the kibble on it.

"The kibble is the sort of big bucket they whack on there full of concrete.

"So it looks like it's a mechanical failure."

Mr Setka said one of the injured men had broken both of his arms.

"The one that was under the kibble for a while is in critical condition," he said.

VicRoads said motorists should avoid the area, and recommended using alternative routes such as the Eastern Freeway and Canterbury Road.
