Rohingya Muslims demand citizenship rights on World Refugee Day

Displaced Rohingya refugees took to the streets of the Cox-Bazar region of Bangladesh on Wednesday to demand citizenship rights on International Refugee Day.

Dozens of the Muslim minority were lined up in the streets of Kutupalong camp carrying banners calling for their recognition as citizens of Myanmar. At present, Myanmar is providing identification cards to Rohingya and some refugees consider them insufficient.

Many protesters have also asked the international community to do what is necessary to protect them in overcrowded refugee camps with the advent of the monsoon season.

International relief agencies and the authorities in Bangladesh are struggling to protect hundreds of thousands of Rohingya refugees from landslides and deadly seasonal floods ahead of the peak of the expected rainy season in July.

Rain and storms that struck for a few days at the start of the rainy season caused landslides and floods earlier this month, killing two people and injuring a number of refugees, as well as damaging bamboo and plastic shelters on muddy hill slopes.
