'Pipe bomb' found inside stolen car turns out to be storage container
Police have deemed the area safe after making a number of controlled detonations. (9NEWS)
A suspicious item found inside a stolen car that police originally believed was a pipe bomb was actually a plastic storage container.
Police said they were patrolling Mountain Highway in Bayswater at 2.30am today when they came across a Toyota Echo that had fake number plates.
When authorities pulled up to the car a man and woman fled. The woman was arrested a short time later but the man remains at large.
Police then conducted a search of the stolen Toyota and found a number of items they deemed suspicious.
Around 7am today, a number of explosions could be heard as the bomb squad detonated the suspicious items.
Detectives told reporters they had discovered a pipe bomb inside the car but later clarified that it was not suspicious and was just a plastic storage container.
Mountain Highway was closed for hours between Scorsby Road and High Street but has seen reopened.
The area has been deemed safe.
Police said the male suspect left behind a number of items that identify him and authorities are working to track him down.
