TWO thieves are on the run after robbing a man at gunpoint outside his Sydney home.

Police say when the 26-year-old victim pulled into the driveway of his St Clair home in the city's west about 10pm (AEST) yesterday, a man approached asking for assistance, claiming his car had broken down.

But then another man appeared armed with a gun and both offenders forced the victim inside his house, stealing cash and a number of items.

The victim was not injured.

The pair drove off in light blue Holden Commodore.

Police are searching for two men described as of Mediterranean/Middle Eastern appearance, aged 25 to 30 and of medium build.

One was described as wearing a white hooded top with the word 'Lonsdale' across the front, with the other man wore a black hooded top with the same insignia.
