POLICE searching for an elderly man who went missing from the Blue Mountains on the weekend have found a body in a creek.

A police rescue squad, volunteers, and members of the Rural Fire Service made the discovery in bushland at Mount Riverview, east of Blaxland, soon after 9.15am (AEST) today.

The body was in a creek near Nicholas Parade.

It has not been formally identified, but police believe it is an 88-year-old man last seen near his home about 6pm (AEST) on Sunday.

A post-mortem examination will be conducted to establish the cause of the man's death and police will prepare a report for the Coroner.

An extensive search operation had been conducted of the area over the past three days involving police from the Blue Mountains and Penrith local area commands, PolAir, and Rural Fire Service volunteers.
