Court hears of illegal immigrant's Bridge suicide bid
June 09, 2009 12:00am
AN illegal immigrant from North Korea who stole a woman's handbag from her arm told police he would jump off the Sydney Harbour Bridge if they sent him home, a court heard yesterday.
Dae Sung Lee, 23, appearing before Sydney's West Bail Court on a theft charge, told police through an interpreter he stole the bag in a Sydney park because his mate said it would be a funny prank to play on his girlfriend.
Police told the court there was no mate, or girlfriend, and the woman had been hysterical after the attack.
Lee, a North Korean national, has no job, no passport and has been entirely supported by charity since he arrived in Australia illegally in November last year.
Police records tendered in court allege Lee is under Department of Immigration supervision but did not have any financial support. He lives in a hostel, has no family, and relies on the Red Cross for money, records said.
Lee allegedly ran from behind a woman in Tumbalong Park, Darling Harbour early Sunday morning and wrestled her handbag, containing $55 and two mobile phones, from her grip.
He was granted bail to reappear at the Downing Centre on June 11.
