dead, two injured in highway smash
June 11, 2009 10:17pm
TWO young women have died and two men are injured after a three-car crash at Yering, near Yarra Glen, this afternoon.
The accident occurred just after 5pm (AEST) today on the Melba Highway northeast of Melbourne, police said.
Police believe the 18-year-old female driver of a Toyota Camry lost control on a sweeping bend.
Her car clipped a passing Toyota Hilux utility and crashed into the side of a Toyota four-wheel drive.
The Camry driver, of Vermont, and her 19-year-old passenger, of Chirnside Park, died at the scene.
Two men in the four-wheel drive suffered minor injuries and were taken to the Maroondah Hospital.
The driver and passenger in the utility were not hurt.
The two fatalities bring Victoria's annual road toll to 138, two fewer than at the same time last year.
Police will prepare a report for the coroner.
