July 15, 2009 9:19PM
A 24-YEAR-old man has died after his car was hit by an express train in Melbourne's south.
Police said the accident happened at a level crossing in Edithvale at 5.05pm (AEST).
"Police believe a Ford Laser turned left from Station Street and was travelling west on Edithvale Road when it was struck by a train," police said.
"The 24-year-old driver from Carrum Downs was the sole occupant of the car and died at the scene.
"The train was running express to Frankston at the time of the collision and had no passengers on board."
Police would not comment on reports the car was stationary on the level crossing at the time of the incident.
A report is being prepared for the coroner, the police said.
The crash has caused major delays for other trains in the area.
