Man shot dead by police after chase
June 2, 2009 - 3:42PM
Police today shot a man dead in the Northern Tablelands town of Armidale.
The man was being chased by police and ran through Caffiends, a cafe in the Beardy Street Mall.
Scattering patrons, he grabbed a kitchen knife from a staff area and ran out the back onto Cinder Lane.
He was shot there by a plain clothes officer. The manager of a Dick Smith shop was in a rear room when he heard a shot.
"He's come back in and said: 'Oh my god, I've just seem somebody get shot,'" fellow employee James told smh.com.au.
"He heard the gunshot, he walked around the corner, only a few steps and he saw the person on the ground ... and an undercover police officer over him saying: 'It will be all right mate, the ambulance is on the way,'" he said.
"He saw him lying in the gutter, gasping for air."
Police began first aid and resuscitation until ambulance personnel arrived, but the man died.
"A lady nearby was taken to Armidale Hospital with no physical injuries, but suffering distress," an Ambulance Service of NSW spokesman said.
No police officers were injured.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
