John Ibrahim's sister Maha Sayour was dark on the money
December 13, 2011
WITH a big smile and holding the hand of her lawyer, the sister of nightclub owner John Ibrahim left court a free woman after being cleared over nearly $3 million of cash found in the ceiling of her home.
Maha Sayour, 41, was found not guilty of recklessly dealing with the proceeds of crime after a three-day judge alone trial at the District Court.
Ms Sayour was charged after $2.86 million was found in 95 plastic bags in a ceiling cavity above her newly renovated kitchen in South Wentworthville on April 29, 2009.It followed an earlier raid on March 31, 2009, when police found $3850 in a similar plastic bag in Ms Sayour's walk-in wardrobe.
Maha Sayour found not guilty
Ms Sayour told police she did not know about the $2.86 million, but the $3850 was from her brother John, who gave her $500 a week to help with the mortgage.Outside court, her lawyer Stephen Alexander said the mother of five was relieved that the two-year ordeal was over."She just wants to go home and look after her mother and get on with her life," he said.
Judge John North rejected the Crown's submission that the bag containing the $3850 was from the ceiling cavity, saying he could not be satisfied that Ms Sayour's explanation for the money was a lie.
