33 Civilians, 19 Regime Troops Killed as Syria Clashes Rage

Syrian security forces on shot dead 33 people, among them 17 in Daraa, the southern cradle of the revolt, and 10 in the flashpoint central city of Homs, the Local Coordination Committees announced, while 19 regime forces were killed in clashes with suspected army deserters, a rights group said.

Five other civilians were killed in the northwestern Idlib province and another in the central province of Hama, the LCC, an activist network spurring protests on the ground, added.

For its part the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said security forces shot dead 16 people in Daraa and that at least 19 soldiers and members of the security forces were killed in clashes with suspected army defectors.

In a statement received by Agence France Presse, the Observatory said the civilians were killed by gunfire from checkpoints across Daraa manned by the security forces.

The Britain-based group also said the bodies of five soldiers, including a general, were also found in the northwestern Idlib province bordering Turkey.

Almost daily pro-democracy rallies in Syria have been met with violent repression, at a cost of 3,500 lives, mostly civilians, according to the United Nations.

President Bashar al-Assad regime says it is fighting “armed terrorist gangs” backed by foreign agitators.
