Miqati Assures Clinton that Lebanon Will Implement International Obligations

Prime Minister Najib Miqati held talks in New York on Monday with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton during which he assured her that Lebanon will honor its international obligations, reported LBC.

The meeting was held at the office of the head of the United Nations Security Council. Lebanon currently holds the council's rotating presidency.

Meanwhile, Assistant U.S. Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs Jeffrey Feltman stated that Miqati should exercise great caution in dealing with the developments in Syria, reported LBC without giving further details.

The Prime Minister traveled to New York on Saturday to head a session for the Security Council.

Lebanon’s interest lies in “respecting U.N. resolutions and avoiding selectivity in their implementation,” Premier Najib Miqati said in New York, where he arrived Sunday.

He is scheduled to hold talks with top U.N. officials, including Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.

Lebanon holds the rotating presidency of the Security Council for the month of September and Miqati will chair the sessions on Tuesday where he is expected to address the current developments in the region.

Foreign Minister Adnan Mansour and Lebanon’s Ambassador to the U.N. Nawwaf Salam will also attend the sessions.

Miqati is scheduled to meet with Ban and heads of delegations participating in the 66th General Assembly meeting. His talks begin at around noon New York time.

The premier stressed in New York that he is seeking to “protect Lebanon and strengthen its position and role in the international arena, in addition to fortifying its domestic front and addressing all local issues in a calm manner.”
